Music in the 1980s was all about image and with the advent and popularity of MTV, the images that accompanied artists became more important than ever. When it came to music during the decade, nothing was understated, not the sound, not the fashion, not even the charity. The 1980s reflected the beginning of a period of great income disparity and a focus on affluence was reflected in the music. There were also several new genres that popped up including, Hip Hop, New Wave and Hair Metal, all of which have influenced music today.

Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Prince, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Lionel Richie, Cher, Hall & Oates, David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, John Mellencamp, George Michael, Tiffany, New Kids on the Block, Debbie Gibson, Wham!

They shot to the top of the charts in 1985 with their platinum-selling track Take On Me.

And as boy band A-ha reunite in preparation for their 2018 tour, one member in particular looks as if he's spent his time out of the spotlight discovering the secret to anti-aging.

Morten Harket defied his 57 years as he posed for photos with his fellow group members, Magne Furuholmen, 54, and Paul Waaktaar-Savoy, 56.

The oldest member of the group - which originates from Norway - looked rested, happy and healthy as he smiled for cameras and answered questions about the forthcoming tour and new album of acoustic tracks,.

His bandmates also looked great for their age, clearly having spent the past seven years relaxing since their farewell tour.

Morten looked casual in a cream sweater and grey jeans, while Magne kept things smart with a cornflower blue blazer over a plum shirt.

Meanwhile Paul looked uber-laid back in a baggy grey sweater and black jeans. He finished his look off with a brown trilby.

There wasn't a grey hair in sight on the trio, who smouldered for the photo-call like the pros that they are.

The group were congregating in Berlin, Germany for the reunion, where they took part in a Q&A about their plans for next year - which includes a back-to-their-roots album.

Branding the press conference their 'Summer Solstice' A-Ha met at the Norwegian Embassy to preview their new MTV Unplugged DVD, followed by a talk moderated by Jo Nesbø, the international best-selling author from Norway.

BIRŻEBBUĠA RECORD OF GREATEST CHRISTMAS TREES STRUCTURE

As Christmas is approaching, Birżebbuġa residents will this year celebrate the festivities with greater joy following their record project of Christmas decorations.
They set the national record (Malta Records) with the greatest Christmas tree structure and the biggest amount of bulbs and synchronized lights.
In all, enthusiasts have erected 24 Christmas trees with 6.8 kilometres of lights and 68,000 bulbs. The trees have a height of 40 metres.
Last year, the locality of Birżebbuġa had broke the record for the tallest Christmas tree which was 7 storeys tall.

FACEBOOK ADDS COLLECTION OF 1,000 FREE SONGS TO USE IN VIDEOS

It's part of a new initiative intended to provide tools to video creators on Facebook and Instagram.

Facebook has added a "sound collection" of 1,000 free, pre-cleared songs by mostly unknown artists for its users to add to their videos.

The social media platform started unrolling the new material on Friday (Dec. 8) as part of its larger Facebook for Creators program it announced last month. The new initiative is intended to provide video creators with tools to develop their skills (and followings) on Facebook and Instagram.

The songs range across basically all genres with options to sort by moods, such as "scary," "dreamy" and "bright," as well as song lengths and types of vocals.

While you're not likely to recognize any of the tracks featured here, there are a couple distinguished artists in the mix. Among them are Grammy-winner Charlie Peacock, who produced The Civil Wars' 2011 debut album Barton Hollow; and guitarist and composer Lyle Workman, who worked on Superbad, The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, among others. As such, the service also works as a discovery tool for new acts.

There is also an accompanying collection of over 1,500 sound effects ranging from venetian blinds opening to dental suction tool.

It may only be a matter of time before popular acts join the service as well. In September it was reported that Facebook was negotiating with major record labels and music publishers for rights to legally include copyrighted music in videos uploaded to the platform.

THE WALKMAN AND ITS IMPRESSIVE HEADPHONES (1980)

January 01 1980

As well as changing the way musicians could create music, in the 70s and 80s technology was having a profound effect on how we listened to it. But not all new gadgets were a success. The hilarious "stereo radio that you can feel" that Kieran Prendiville demonstrates at the beginning of this clip is lost to time, most likely because it looks ridiculous. The Walkman, however, was a huge hit in the 1980s - due, in no small part, to its small headphones, which Kieran proves to be impressively sensitive.

THE BIRTH OF THE CD (1983)

January 01 1983

It was shiny! It was small! It used lasers! And it didn't matter if it got dusty. Would the compact disc, introduced in 1982, do better in a "hi-fi world that has become something of a graveyard for bright ideas that came to nothing"? Tomorrow's World greets its launch with enthusiasm, but also something of an eye roll, listing other formats like the Elcaset and 8-track cartridge that consumers promptly consigned to the tech dustbin.
